Národní filmový archiv byl založen roku 1943, v roce 1946 se stal členem Mezinárodní federace filmových archivů (FIAF). V roce 1997 se stal zakládajícím členem Asociace evropských cinematék ACE (Association des Cinémathèques Européenes). V České republice se řadí k nejvýznamnějším paměťovým institucím; vedle plnění archivní role se podílí na zpřístupňování audiovizuálního kulturního dědictví veřejnosti, zabývá se vědeckou a publikační činností, prezentací filmového dědictví a rozvojem současné české kinematografie a pohyblivého obrazu.
